Lionel Robins, a totally dedicated fundraiser for Princess Margaret Hospital, will complete a four-year term as Chairman of the Board, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, on Sept. 27, 2006.
While at the helm, Mr. Robins helped the Foundation achieve record-breaking net revenues, launch The Weekend to End Breast Cancer fundraising event, and secure a $25 million private donation from the Campbell family – the largest gift to cancer, and specifically to breast cancer, in the history of Canadian philanthropy.
Mr. Robins, who has also served as Board member and Vice Chair, has devoted 10 years of tireless service to this institution. He first got involved in 1996 as a fundraiser for the hospital's capital campaign. Despite a recession, he was instrumental in meeting the campaign goal and advancing development of a strategic plan and governance study to guide the Foundation into the future. The hospital's main lobby is named in honour of his late sister, Toby.
An experience he describes as “humbling” at the bedside of a dying friend inspired his vision to create a palliative care centre at Princess Margaret Hospital that would serve not only dying patients, but also the dedicated health-care professionals working with them. Almost $5 million was raised and despite the advent of SARS, which shut down normal operations at health-care institutions in Toronto, the project – The Harold and Shirley Lederman Palliative Care Centre – was completed on time.
Mr. Robins' successor is Neville Kirchmann. Both men came on the Board on Aug. 21, 1996. Mr. Kirchmann, a major donor and supporter, stepped down to take on the role of President & CEO in September 1999. He returned to the Board in September 2003. His unique experience serving as a Board leadership volunteer and Foundation executive manager is of tremendous value. |
