Dr. Robert Buckman, author of Cancer is a Word Not a Sentence
Patient education is a top priority at Princess Margaret Hospital, an acclaimed leader in this sphere. New initiatives sponsored by the Foundation during the year included Living with Cancer, a nine-part TV Ontario series co-hosted by PMH medical oncologist Dr. Robert Buckman. The show brought together cancer experts to discuss current cancer-related topics and answer audience questions.

Dr. Buckman also published Cancer is a Word Not a Sentence, his newest book to guide patients, families and caregivers. The Foundation hosted the book launch at the hospital and also at a public reading and lecture event. Dr. Buckman is donating 100% of net proceeds from books sold directly at the hospital, plus 30% of other sales, to patient education programs.

A group of dedicated volunteers, the PMH Breast Centre Women's Committee, teamed up with six hospital dietitians led by Daniela Fierini, cookbook author Elise Mecklinger and the Foundation to produce Goes Down Easy. This practical cookbook – the first of its kind in Canada – has 100 easy-to-prepare recipes designed to help manage eating difficulties during cancer treatment. It provides useful ideas on how to cope with the most common side effects – loss of appetite, nausea, taste changes, swallowing difficulties and diarrhea. Net proceeds will also support patient education programs.

These books are for sale at the Foundation kiosk in the hospital's main atrium, near the Murray Street entrance.

Princess Margaret Hospital dietitians helped develop a practical nutritional guide for people living with cancer. The project was the brainchild of the volunteer Breast Centre Women's Committee, funded by the Laugh Lines comedy event. Order at www.pmhf.uhnstore.ca or by calling 1-866-937-7643.
