Thank You!
Our Best Fundraising Year Ever; Our Map for the Road Ahead
|
 |
Thanks to your ongoing loyalty and commitment, we have been able to further advance the vital work underway at Princess Margaret Hospital, Canada's leading cancer research hospital. Your remarkable generosity has helped us achieve a record-breaking $61.9 million in net fundraising revenues during the fiscal year covered in this report, April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006.
This year, we reviewed our approach and activities to ensure our three core businesses – fundraising and donor relations, investment management and fund granting – continue to sustain current programs and also meet the constant, ever-growing funding needs of this world-leading institution and its facilities.

Our review resulted in a strategic plan to direct us over the next three years as we strive to realize our vision To Conquer Cancer. We reinforced our purpose, which is to raise and steward funds to deliver breakthrough research, exemplary teaching and compassionate care at the hospital. We defined four underpinning values to guide every aspect of our work – passion for the vision, entrepreneurship, partnership and accountability. And we restated our key financial goals: To raise $200 million in net fundraising revenue and to reach $110 million in bequest revenue and expectations by March 31, 2009.
During the year, we received a $5 million commitment from Graham Farquharson to support kidney cancer research. This gift, to honour his wife, will establish The Anna-Liisa Farquharson Chair in Kidney Cancer Research and The Anna-Liisa Farquharson Kidney Cancer Research Program. This wonderful gift moves Princess Margaret one giant step closer to being the national hub of expertise for kidney cancer research and treatment.
We also received a second installment of $5 million toward the $25 million gift from the Campbell family to support the work of Dr. Tak Mak and 100 scientists and staff dedicated to solving the puzzle that is breast cancer. We are counting on this team, which is housed at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital, to accelerate and leverage current research into future treatments that will eventually conquer this disease.
In Major Gifts and Planned Giving, we exceeded expectations and raised more than $22.5 million. We continued to focus on cultivating and soliciting significant gifts and bequests to support our priorities. We also completed the fundraising for three new endowed research chairs, as well as for other endowed and expendable funds.

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital – the third annual – was another awe-inspiring event. Once again, both of us walked with the more than 4,880 other participants who trekked 60 km over two days. Net proceeds of $12.1 million were directed to breast cancer research, clinical treatment and patient education programs. We will also have walked in the fourth annual event, Sept. 8-10, 2006, when this report reaches you.
This year marked the 10th anniversary of our two annual lotteries. Luxury condos were added to the fall lottery – now called Cash, Cars & Condos – which netted $8.8 million. The spring Home Lottery netted $9.7 million.
In the area of Community Giving, we continued to enable, encourage and support every kind of donor to contribute through a variety of programs. These include the Leadership Giving Society, Tribute and Memorial gifts, The Wings of Hope Dove Wall, and Partners for Hope, our monthly giving program – all now available on our revamped website at www.pmhf.ca. Our robust direct mail program brought in more than 78,000 single gifts and added almost 10,000 new donors to our roster. Altogether, these programs raised $4.5 million in net proceeds during the year.
The expertise of our Special Events team and our wonderful hardworking volunteers helped shape and guide more than 100 community-based fundraising initiatives such as Gift of Life, which raised $51,000 for leukemia research, and the Toronto Fire Fighter Calendar, which raised $72,000 to fund work-related cancer research. Through these efforts, net proceeds to the hospital were $4 million.
We would like to thank our Board members and volunteers for their stellar contributions to our excellent annual performance. Two new Board members joined us during the year – Stephen Goldhar and David Harris – and wasted no time in adding their extensive talents and expertise to the team. We are also honoured to work with superb and hardworking Foundation staff members.
As we move ahead with our new strategic framework in place, we believe we are poised to meet the challenge of continuing to be Canada's largest private fundraiser of cancer research. Our task is daunting in the increasingly complex world of health-care funding but we are indeed up to it, thanks to all of you.
