President’s Message
“Help Conquer Cancer”… an extraordinary call to action.
The only true asset a not-for-profit organization has is its vision. Our vision at The Princess Margaret is a powerful one - “TO CONQUER CANCER IN OUR LIFETIME”. Our vision keeps us focused, motivated and inspired. This is a vision, an ambition and an aspiration. Everyone at The Princess Margaret has a personal story and connection to cancer.
The statistics are daunting…..every 8 minutes someone in Ontario will be diagnosed with cancer and nearly 11 million people globally will be diagnosed with cancer this year according to UICC estimates.
Chances are, if you are on this site and reading this, you have a personal story about cancer. Sometimes it seems we have made slow or no progress in our fight to conquer this disease. This is not correct if you look at survivorship, early detection, and the many many advances made by scientists over the past 30 years.
As Canadians, I think we should be proud of the fact The Princess Margaret has become known as one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Dr. Ben Neel, Dr. Tak Mak, Dr. John Dick, Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, Dr. David Jaffray and many others… are all world leaders and world beaters. (Please click here for more information on our top five status).
We have been blessed by supporters like the Campbell Family, Linda, Gaye, and Susan. The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute has been established through the generosity and confidence of the Campbell family. “Charity is the greatest gift of all.” This quote speaks to the extraordinary gifts we receive from volunteers and our donor community. We have so many events and activities, large and small, each one contributes resources and inspiration to The Princess Margaret. We have walkers who contribute so much through The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. We have riders who are contributing to “Conquering Cancer” by riding 200km to Niagara Falls in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. We receive tribute donations for $10, $25 or $50, all which are important to us. We sell lottery tickets and hold over 100 community events a year, all to raise awareness and funds for one of the “Top Five”.
So please, spend some time on our site. Share a story, post a comment on my blog or make a donation. Get to know one of our top researchers or read a patient story. Help us to “Conquer Cancer in Our Lifetime”. We can’t do it alone.
