The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute (CFCRI) is the basic science research ‘hub’ within Princess Margaret Hospital. Here, over 160 researchers, 370 trainees and 460 technical support staff collaborate to gain a better understanding of cancer and to develop strategies for prevention, treatment and ultimately a cure for the disease.
Some of the most recognized and respected cancer specialists in the world work at CFCRI and lead teams in the following areas of research:

- Epidemiology, statistics and behavioural research
- Psychosocial oncology and palliative care

PMH prides itself not only on the comprehensiveness of cancer research conducted, but on the speed that findings move from the ‘bench to the bedside and back to the bench’. This is known as translational research, and PMH’s depth of knowledge, location in a large international city (with access to a large number of patients), and commitment to the cure make it a world-class centre for biomedical progress.
Advanced Medical Discovery Institute
Part of CFCRI, the Advanced Medical Discovery Institute focuses on the development of transgenic mouse models for disorders of cell growth and the immune system. It is led by Dr. Tak Mak, who is world-renowned for his cloning of the human T-cell receptor.
The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research
Also part of CFCRI, this institute, largely funded by the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, focuses 100% on the disease of breast cancer. The team is made up of basic scientists, translational researchers and clinical doctors who are dedicated to finding ways to prevent breast cancer as well as new and less toxic drugs and treatments for the disease. World-recognized expert, Dr. Tak Mak, is the director of this institute.
