3530 Participants Raise $14.5 Million in second annual Ride to Conquer Cancer
In its second year, The Ride to Conquer Cancer has emerged as Canada's most successful cycling fundraiser. Yesterday, The Princess Margaret announced that 3530 participants from across North America raised $14.5 million.

Today, The Princess Margaret announced that 3530 participants from across the world raised $14.5 million in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. The event inspired 3530 men and women from five countries, nine Canadian provinces and 13 US states to become involved in conquering cancer in a bold way.

Generous Gift to PMH to Change the Face of Breast Cancer Diagnosis in Canada
Through the extraordinary generosity of Emmanuelle Gattuso and Allan Slaight, Princess Margaret Hospital's Breast Cancer Rapid Diagnosis program will receive a $12.5 million donation in support of its $25 million expansion campaign. The couple is also leading a fundraising campaign to secure the remaining $12.5 million to complete the centre.

Research shows biopsy of recurrent breast cancer can alter treatment
For women with recurrent breast cancer, the treatment the doctor chooses is usually based on the properties of their original breast cancer. A group from Toronto has recently completed the world's first study that compared original breast cancer tumors with a biopsy of suspected tumors that recurred elsewhere in the body.

Researchers found that the biopsy resulted in 20% of the women having a significant change in their treatment. In some cases, this was a change in drug treatment and in others, the biopsy showed the woman did not actually have an advanced cancer, but a benign condition.

Joes Team Swims, Rides, and Runs to Victory, Raising $611,000 for Cancer Research
On Saturday, July 5, 2008, 290 participants raised $611,000 for cancer research through Joe's Team triathlon in Muskoka, Ontario. Funds from the event support the head and neck translational research program at The Princess Margaret in Toronto, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.

Today, The Princess Margaret announced that 2850 participants from across North America raised $14 million in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. The Campbell Family Gives Record Support to Princess Margaret Hospital to Create The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute
Canada's leading cancer research centre announced today that a long-term gift of $37.5 million from the Campbell family will be recognized through the creation of The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute (CFCRI) at Princess Margaret Hospital. The Campbell family's support over the course of their association with Princess Margaret Hospital now totals $67.5 million, representing the largest cumulative private gift to cancer research in Canada.

Canadian lung cancer research will receive a boost thanks to the generosity and energy of donors and volunteers of the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario. Funding for seven new lung cancer studies was announced today as part of the Canadian Cancer Society's total investment of more than $49 million in cancer research across Canada this year.

"The Princess Margaret Home Lottery for Cancer Research has 10 grand prizes including fully furnished and decorated grand prize showhomes built by Greenpark that will open for public viewing 7 days a week beginning Saturday, February 9. "This year's grand prizes are spectacular and include two side-by-side $2.2 million showhomes in Woodbridge and all the homes come with a Mercedes-Benz in the driveway. The Taylor Cup Pond Hockey Championship
Its time to lace em up and hit the ice again for the 3rd annual Taylor Cup Pond Hockey Championship. The puck drops on February 1, 2008, when 36 hockey teams will face off on Sparrow Lake, just north of Orillia. The weekend event is held in memory of Judy Taylor who lost her battle against cancer in 2003. Proceeds go to The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundations Cancer Research Fund. This years goal is to raise more than $100,000.

IBM World Community Grid Squeezes Decades of Cancer Research into Two Years
The research team, led by Dr. Igor Jurisica at the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), and scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network, are the first from Canada to use the World Community Grid, a network of PCs and laptops with the power equivalent to one of the globe's top five fastest supercomputers.

Bladder cancer study determines optimal treatment to maximize life expectancy
Cancer specialists and researchers at Princess Margaret Hospital, University Health Network (UHN), are tackling an ongoing controversy about the best way to treat an aggressive form of bladder cancer – immediate radical surgery or a more conservative initial approach using immunotherapy?

To answer that question, Drs. Girish Kulkarni, Shabbir Alibhai and colleagues calculated the life expectancy and the quality of life expected from the two treatment methods. The team used a decision-analysis tool – the Markov model – a first for this form of bladder cancer.

Early this morning, 5,521 Weekend to End Breast Cancer walkers, the largest number in the event’s five year history, set off on Day Two of their 60-km walk. Yesterday, Princess Margaret Hospital announced that these women and men raised $17,300,000 in Toronto’s 5th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer® event, a 60-kilometre walk to raise funds for breast cancer research and care in Toronto. The 6th annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital is already planned for Sept. 5-7, 2008.

Record 5,521 walkers raise $17.3 million in 5th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event
Today, Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) announced that 5,521 walkers raised $17,300,000 in its annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event. This multi-day event is the largest single-event breast cancer fundraiser in Canada and this year, boasts a record number of walkers for its five year history. Spurred on by this continued growth in participation and support, the 6th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Toronto is already planned for September 5-7, 2008.

Princess Margaret Hospital unveils Commemorative Weekend to End Breast Cancer Statue
Walkers in the fifth annual WEBC event this weekend now have a newly erected statue to recognize their fundraising efforts, at the entrance of Princess Margaret Hospital. On permanent display, the statue also acknowledges the many women and men who have fought breast cancer.

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Commemorative Sculpture was unveiled today in front of the hospital in the presence of walkers, volunteers, breast cancer survivors, as well as friends and family of loved ones who fought but succumbed to the disease. Princess Margaret Hospital staff, including those responsible for the event’s beginnings in Toronto, were also witnesses to the emotional event.

One-step breast cancer treatment combines radiation surgery at PMH
Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) breast cancer specialists are using a new way to treat patients by delivering a one-time dose of radiation during surgery. The procedure, called intraoperative radiation therapy, takes less than an hour and eliminates the need for further radiation treatments.

On May 17, the PMH team combined the expertise of surgeons, radiation medicine specialists (radiation oncologists, physicists and therapists) and nurses to perform its first procedure. It marked the first time the portable intrabeam radiotherapy machine that makes this procedure possible has been used in Canada. The PMH team has since treated two more patients.

PMH Researchers Activate New Cancer Drug Using Light and Oxygen
PMH researchers have developed a new cancer drug, triggered by a laser light. The process, known as photodynamic therapy (PDT), kills only cancer cells, leaving surrounding, healthy cells intact. The study is a collaboration between senior PMH scientists Drs. Gang Zheng and Brian Wilson. It was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences earlier this week.
