Take My Hand, a benefit concert hosted by Alli’s Journey, at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, June 1, featured some of Canada’s top performers to help support the Healing Beyond the Body program at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), which integrates all aspects of care for cancer patients -- mind, body and soul.
The crowd in attendance was treated to a wonderful night of performances from Michael Burgess, The Canada Pops Orchestra, Jackie Richardson, Guido Basso and Bob Egan from Blue Rodeo. But best of all, people came together to help Alli’s Journey support groups that provide critical care, counseling and assistance to young adults, 18-35, coping with cancer.
“This concert is just the first step in a long journey that I hope people will continue to take with me,” says Alli Shapiro.
Alli’s Journey was founded by Alli Shapiro and her mom Pam Shainhouse, as a result of Alli’s diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 19 and her experience battling the disease. Alli’s battle with Hodgkin’s inspired her to share her strength and hope with others facing cancer.
“Chemo Buddies,” one of the Healing Beyond the Body programs, is the first project Alli’s Journey will support. This group of trained volunteers provides support to outpatients waiting for their chemotherapy treatment. About 100 patients a day are treated at Princess Margaret Hospital’s chemotherapy unit.
