How Will the Funds Raised by the 2008 Ride to Conquer Cancer be Used?
Dr. Ben Neel, Director of The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute, and Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, Medical Director of the Cancer Program at Princess Margaret Hospital/UHN, together oversee the cancer research and clinical program at The Princess Margaret and have a clear vision of where the money raised by The Ride to Conquer Cancer will be best utilized.
The funds will be invested in three key areas all of which are essential to reaching our end goal to conquer cancer. This means investing in:
  • Programs:  Research into specific types of cancer and new therapies as well as research focused on basic mechanisms of cancer development at a molecular level
  • Platforms:  This includes high content tumour banking, advanced molecular profiling labs, and  biomarker identification
  • People:  Supporting our world-leading scientists and clinicians in the most promising areas of advancement and attracting new individuals to support our vision.

More specifically, funds from the 2008 ride will be utilized for:

Discovering the “Achilles Heel” of each type of tumour
Mythology tells us of Achilles, the all-but-invincible warrior.  As a baby, he was dipped in the River Styx, which made him impervious to harm, except at his heel, where his mother had held him.  Our scientists believe that every cancer cell has a weakness which may be exploited to kill the cell, just as Achilles was dealt a mortal blow when a poisoned arrow pierced his heel.

Enhancing our world-leading clinical trials program
No treatment or drug may be approved for use without rigorous testing and proof that it is better and safer than the current treatment.  Our patients participate in clinical trials so that tomorrow's treatments may be safer, better and more effective.  We provide a research program where the new knowledge we acquire is ‘translated’ as quickly and safely as possible into new treatments and therapies that help our patients, and patients around the world.

Creating a chemotherapy daycare facility that sets a new world standard
The delivery of chemotherapy must be safe, efficient and effective for patients and the staff who deliver the care.  By working with our patients and staff we have designed an environment that will set a new standard for safety and efficiency, while responding to our desire for a humane and warm place for people at a challenging time in their treatment.  This facility will set a new world standard for the delivery of chemotherapy.

Building on our leadership in GTx image-guided surgery and radiation
Our goal is to kill tumour cells with precision, while leaving healthy tissue untouched.  Our scientists, surgeons, radiation oncologists and technical staff are designing the tools of the future in our laboratories and moving this leading edge treatment into clinical trials thanks to your help.
