How It All began
In January 2003, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation announced The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, a two-day, 60 kilometre walk to raise funds for breast cancer research. Thousands of women and men united for the first weekend, Sept. 19-21, 2003 and walked 60 kilometres through Toronto in support of Princess Margaret Hospital.

Audrey Loeb, a professor at Ryerson University and a consultant at the Toronto law firm Miller Thompson LLP, an established member of the Toronto legal community, has been practicing and teaching law for over 25 years. As someone who has seen her sister survive breast cancer, she has faced this devastating disease at the front lines. Regrettably, one of Audrey’s closest friends was not so fortunate, and passed away from breast cancer, leaving behind her three-year-old, 15-month-old, and husband. Audrey wanted to give something back to the community, and took on the responsibility and honour of being a board member of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation in 1997.

After participating in a multi-day walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago in 2002, she made it her goal to bring this concept to Canada; to bring a new source of revenue to The Foundation, while simultaneously providing Canada with the opportunity to experience the healing power of thousands of people coming together for a multi-day event to put an end to breast cancer.

“Being able to play a role in the inception of The Weekend to End Breast Cancer has been a valuable opportunity for me. But I won’t rest until we have 5000 participants raising millions for The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation,” says Audrey. “Breast Cancer affects too many of us, and Princess Margaret Hospital’s scientists need these resources to continue their research toward finding a cure.”

Miller Thompson LLP put together a team of 24 walkers, and Audrey met with representatives from other firms to help them start their own teams. “The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is something to which I am fully committed. As a member of the Toronto Business Community, I want to make sure I do everything I can to attract other businesses and individuals to get involved by calling 416/815-WALK (9255) or by going online to register today.”

We encourage you to visit Audrey’s homepage to read more about her journey as well as the journey of others involved in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer.

Last year’s WEBC had over 4,889 coming close to Audrey’s goal of 5000 walkers set 3 years ago and the walk has raised $31 million to date for breast cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital.
